Why it fails, and why we are not bound by it

Triangulation resolves depth from the ratio of baseline to distance. Error therefore grows roughly with the square of range. Precision at longer range needs a longer baseline. A longer baseline means a larger head, harder calibration and worse occlusion. FMCW precision depends on chirp bandwidth and linearity, not on geometry. It therefore does not degrade with distance.
