Why it fails, and why we are not bound by it
Clear materials transmit most incident light, so a projected pattern lands on whatever is behind the part and the reported depth belongs to that object rather than the surface. Coherent detection gains sensitivity from mixing with the local oscillator rather than from return intensity, so the weak Fresnel reflection at the surface is still enough to range on.
