Why it fails, and why we are not bound by it

Structured light assumes the surface scatters the projected pattern back. A mirror does not — it sends the pattern elsewhere, leaving dropouts, while interreflections between parts fabricate surfaces that are not there. FMCW reads the frequency difference between the return and the local oscillator instead of the deformation of a pattern, so specular returns carry usable range information.
