Why it fails, and why we are not bound by it

Two projected-light units with overlapping fields read the patterns of each other as noise. Higher power helps against ambient light, but it soon reaches the laser safety limits for work near people.

Each FMCW unit has its own chirp. Only returns that match its own local oscillator produce a valid beat. Multiple radars share one airspace for the same reason. Gain comes from mixing, not from emitted power, so the power budget stays modest.
