Why it fails, and why we are not bound by it

Structured light and time-of-flight must both separate their own projected light from the background. Direct sunlight reaches the order of a hundred thousand lux, and narrowband filters have limits. Coherent reception responds only to returns that match the frequency of the local oscillator. Broadband sunlight produces no matching beat. It is not filtered out. It is structurally absent from the measurement.
