Why it fails, and why we are not bound by it

Structured light and time-of-flight both have to separate their own projected light from the background. Direct sunlight reaches the order of a hundred thousand lux, and narrowband filters only go so far. Coherent reception responds solely to returns matching the local oscillator’s frequency; broadband sunlight produces no corresponding beat, so it is not filtered out so much as structurally absent.
