What makes it hard
Biological tissue is translucent to visible light: light enters the surface layer, scatters repeatedly, and returns from somewhere near the surface. For 3D vision built on the assumption that light reflects off the surface, the depth decision is inherently ambiguous — is this the surface, or a few millimeters beneath it?
The same property is also the opportunity: subsurface scattering carries information about internal structure, which is exactly what OCT exploits for tomographic imaging.
What we measured
1,184,017 raw points. Surface texture, the boundary between fat and muscle, and the layering of the cut face are all distinguishable.
