What makes it hard
White glossy automotive paint is specular reflection at its most typical. A projected pattern does not scatter back to the camera; it reflects away according to the mirror law, while highlight regions simply blow out the sensor. Inspection of body panels has therefore long relied on human eyes and hands, or on spraying developer first — which means cleaning afterwards.
Dent detection is harder still: what matters is not an absolute dimension but a subtle break in surface continuity. That needs dense depth across the whole region, not a handful of sample points.
What we measured
A complete capture of a body side panel, covering the door, wheel arch and mirror. 786,432 raw points, of which about 11% were invalid depth pixels (no return); after removing those and statistical outliers, roughly 670,000 remain.
The dent in the middle of the door reads clearly in the cloud — not from annotation, but from the break in surface continuity itself.
