Smart Manufacturing

Inspection of reflective parts, precision ranging and large-object 3D modeling: measurable 3D data for the production line

Use Cases

3D Measurement Problems on the Production Line

Smart manufacturing depends on reliable 3D data for inspection, positioning and digitization. Current methods are limited in three kinds of task:

  • Reflective and dark parts: On glossy metal, car paint and dark plastic, structured light and laser triangulation produce missing points or false points. Inspection often falls back to the human eye.
  • Precision measurement at long range: Equipment alignment, travel and deformation monitoring need sub-millimeter precision at long distances. Contact gauges and laser triangulation cannot cover them.
  • Large-object modeling: Digitizing fixtures, tooling, equipment and production lines needs scans that are both large and precise.

Applications

Surface and dimensional inspection (LUC-VISION™): Aligned colour and depth for defect and dimensional inspection of reflective and dark parts. Depth precision is 0.21 mm (1σ) in Fine mode. A dent on glossy car paint has a measured case.

Precision ranging and motion measurement (LUC-POINT™): 0.1 mm precision at 100 m, with distance and radial velocity in the same measurement. Use it for equipment alignment, long-travel positioning and the speed of moving parts.

Large-object 3D modeling (LUC-SPHERE™): 50 µm range accuracy at 20 m and a 360° × 270° scanning field of view, for 3D modeling and precision measurement of tooling, equipment and production lines.

For robot picking and assembly of reflective and dark parts, see the Robotics page.

Evidence

  • Surface inspection: measured. See the glossy car paint dent case.
  • Precision ranging and large-object modeling: figures come from the product datasheets. Send a sample or request an on-site evaluation for your conditions.
